Ellen J. (Shoemaker) Durham's last name may have actually been SHUMAKE, as indicated on the 1850 Wilkes County, NC Census for the family of William and Fanny Shumate, who had a daughter named Ellen, who is the correct age. I will use "Shoemaker" since that is the name give on her certificate of death, by her son, T. N.
